On 6 April, Venstre launched its campaign for the European elections in June under the slogan “A strong Denmark in a safe Europe”.

Party leadership including Denmark’s Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Minister of Economy Stephanie Lose addressed over 300 participants at a party event in Nyborg, Denmark.

Venstre’s lead candidate for the European elections Morten Løkkegaard MEP also addressed members making a strong argument in support of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union as an “associate member”.

“The question is no longer if, but how we should prepare Ukraine to become a member of the EU. We believe that Denmark should take the lead in ensuring that. By temporarily giving Ukraine access to parts of the internal market, selected Council meetings and relevant discussions in the European Council, they can be continuously integrated into European cooperation," the party argues in the programme.

As part of the election priorities, Venstre also wants to significantly strengthen the EU's coast and border guard Frontex significantly to improve the protection of the EU's external borders.

“The EU's target is for there to be 10,000 people in Frontex by 2027, but that is far too slow given the current security situation and the migrant pressure that is taking place. In Venstre, we will work to increase the pace. Frontex must be strengthened even more in the coming years,” the party says.

The European elections in Denmark are scheduled to take place on 9 June, as citizens will head to the polls to elect 15 MEPs.
