About us

Your Freedom Our Fight

On 26 March 1976, in Stuttgart, 14 liberal and democrat parties from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom created the first cross-border European political family in history: the Federation of Liberal and Democrat Parties in Europe.

In 1986, we became the European Liberal Democrats and Reformists (ELDR), and in 2012 we transitioned to our new name of Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, as a fully-fledged European political party.

We put people at the centre of our party, and this allows us to grow together, better and stronger, year after year.

The Stuttgart Declaration

During their first meeting in 1976, liberal leaders signed the Stuttgart Declaration, a truly visionary document of its kind based on the Liberal International’s Oxford Manifesto of 1947.

In it, European liberals and democrats define their main political objective as the transformation of the European Community into a European Union holding a free and democratic constitution.

Ten European elections later, our vision of a prosperous, united, and strong Europe remains more valid than ever and motivates us to continue working for all European citizens.
